This is a great time of the year for getting prepared for the summer ahead and the typical gardener wants to get there quicker each year. The potting shed is definitely the one that will come into its own first in the year, and this is an ideal time to examine the various possibilities.

A potting shed is usually made with a sloping roof from front to back and with a sloping window in the front. Behind the window it is usual to erect a good potting bench, and you then have all that is required for a good potting and propagating facility.

The advantage of this type of shed is that it can be used as a store for garden tools and other stuff as well as being able to carry out gardening preparation. The bench should be at the right height to be able to work on seed trays and planting up into pots without bending over.

A good high chair is also a worthwhile investment to save on that aging back. Ideally make sure that the unit gets a good degree of light by making the potting shed face the right direction with the glass sloping window facing south. Preferably make sure that the shed is not covered in the shade of a tree. For those very warm days think about fitting a shade or a blind to stop a full sun bearing down on the plants.

The shed is mainly for sowing seeds into seed trays and then placing them in the garden, but it is useful for giving an initial start to some trays as you would in a greenhouse and then moving them on. Take a little care in fitting the shed out so that the compost can be loaded easily and the pots and seed trays can be easily at hand. It helps a great deal to be organised rather than walking backwards and forwards every 5 minutes.
