About Softball

The 2005 Rangers posted a 17-14 record, and narrowly missed out on earning a Freedom Conference playoff bid. The 2006 Rangers must fill the void of seven graduated seniors, but boast the return of 10 talented players and a superb freshman class.

The mature pitcher on the mound will be Kristin Valle, the lone returning hurler from the 2005 squad. Valle went 1-1 with a 1.22 ERA last spring in 34 innings of work. Behind the plate for Valle could be senior Brittany Westcott, who may make the switch from third base. Westcott hit .363 last year to lead the Rangers and posted a team-high seven doubles.

Kerry Crowley made an immediate impact her rookie campaign, hitting .354 and earning Freedom Conference honors. The infielder played all summer to improve her game and will see action at first, second, or third base this season. Junior Melissa Kraft found her niche at shortstop last spring, and will most likely return to short in ’06. Kaitlyn Manning hopes to see action at third base.

Dena Tomassi and captain Lauren Manning protect the fences in ’06. Jennifer McGroarty will also serve as a captain and will switch between second and third base and may also see action in the outfield along with Nicole Gagliardi.

Coach Evans is excited about the incoming freshman class which boasts an abundance of talent. Infielder Kate Mulligan (Clark, NJ/Arthur Johnson) will look to make an immediate impact as the infielder earned First Team All-Conference and Third Team All-County honors her senior year. Also hoping to crack into the lineup are all-conference pitcher Lauren Collini (Shavertown, PA/Dallas).

RANGERS TO WATCH

Brittany Westcott - Sr. Catcher
Earned her third straight all-conference honor last spring…power hitter who paced the Rangers at the plate with a .363 average…tied for 3rd in career doubles with 7…possesses tremendous instinct…MAC All-Academic Team selection…major is economics.

Jen McGroarty – Sr. Infielder/Outfielder
Started 29 of 30 games played in 2005…voted 2006 co-captain…very athletic and versatile player…has good contact and is a quick hitter…MAC All-Academic Team selection…major is economics.

Kristin Valle – Jr. Pitcher
The squad’s most experienced pitcher…posted a 1.22 ERA in 10 appearances with a 1-1 record and fanned 19 batters…possesses strong drop ball pitch…major is psychology.

Melissa Kraft – Jr. Shortstop
Switched to shortstop last spring and found her niche…has great hands and quick release…very athletic…can hit for distance…two-sport athlete with softball and basketball…major is history.
