Living Roofs, also known as Green Roofs, is the roof of a building that is either partially or completely covered by vegetation. Green roof sheds are a great way to transform your garden shed into an aesthetically pleasing building whilst being wildlife-friendly and climate-friendly. Due to recent concerns about the environment, sustainability, carbon footprint and climate change, the demand for Living Roofs has risen considerably. As a result, people are opting for green roof sheds as a cost-effective and sustained method of getting involved in protecting the environment and conserving wildlife habitats.

Living Roofs provide many benefits and purposes including water storage and absorption, insulation, habitat for wildlife, reduce flood risk and aesthetics. If you’re looking to reduce your energy costs, green roofs sheds are a great environmentally friendly way of achieving this. As a good source of insulation, they have the ability to reduce the flow of heat entering and leaving the surface, meaning you can reduce your gas/electric expenditure to either heat or cool the area.

There are three green roof types; extensive green roof, semi-intensive green roof and intensive green roof.

Extensive Green Roof: requires minimal or periodical maintenance of feeding and weeding if necessary. Often characterized by a plant community of mosses, sedum, herbs, grass and succulents. Suitable for roofs with little load bearing capacity and can withstand a weight of 60-150kg/m2. . Most suitable for a green roof shed.

Semi-Intensive Green Roof: requires a low degree or periodical maintenance. Due to a deeper substrate level, it is a perfect habitat for diverse wildlife communities such as grass, herbs, shrubs and herbaceous perennial. Suitable for a building that can withstand a weight of 120-200kg/m2

Intensive Green Roof: require a high degree of maintenance due to regular irrigation, feeding and fertilization. Usually characterized by harmonious plant communities such as lawn, shrubs and trees. Suitable for a building that can withstand a weight of 180-500kg/m2

How to make a DIY Green Roof

If you’re looking to create your own green roof shed, there are a few things you need to consider before starting:

·         Load Bearing: You’re going to be adding weight to the existing structure, therefore you need to establish whether the load bearing can support the weight of the green roof.

·         Angle: You need to consider whether the angle of your shed is appropriate for a green roof. It is recommended to construct a green roof on a slope between 2°-10° without specialist advice. Anything outside of this range, it is advised to contact a specialist.

·         Layers: For a small scale DIY green roof shed, you will need materials for the following layers; the waterproof membrane, the substrate, the vegetation.

Step 1: Ensure your shed is fully waterproof.

Step 2: Drainage of excess water should be able to escape from the roof. The easiest way to ensure this is to allow the water to flow into the roof’s existing guttering.

Step 3: build a retaining frame around the roof to secure your substrate. Ideally, you should use a rot proof timber that is securely fastened to the roof to prevent slipping.

Step 4: A green roof shed will need waterproof material which is root resistant in addition to what is already in place from the existing structure, e.g. heavy-duty pond liner. This can be fitted to the frame using waterproof glue.

Step 5: Fit a filter sheet over the waterproof root resistant material to retain particles whilst allowing free passage of water.

Step 6: Fit a moisture trap which will reduce the amount of excess water and improve drainage. 

Step 7: Fill the frame with the substrate to achieve a depth of roughly 70 – 200mm.

Step 8: Begin planting. You can tailor which plants you would like to grow dependent of the plants and wildlife you would like to attract. The most commonly used plants for green roof sheds include sedums, grasses and mosses.
